The Best Time to Visit Tortuguero

June 29, 2026 · Hotel Serendipity, Tortuguero

Turtles, tarpon, dry trails or fewer crowds? There is a best month for each — here is the honest local breakdown.

There is no bad time to visit Tortuguero — the rainforest is alive every day of the year. But each season has its own character.

July – October: turtle season

The star attraction. Green sea turtles nest nightly, the canals are full, and the forest is at its greenest. Expect afternoon rain showers — this is rainforest at its most authentic.

February – April: the drier months

The closest Tortuguero gets to a dry season. Trails are firmer, mornings are bright, and it's a wonderful time for hiking, birding and photography.

March – May & September – November: tarpon time

Anglers travel from around the world for the tarpon runs on the Colorado River. Snook fishing peaks around the full moons.

December – January: quiet and lush

Fewer visitors, cooler nights, and the jungle dripping with life. A lovely time for couples seeking solitude.

Our advice

If seeing turtles is your dream, come between mid-July and mid-September. Otherwise, pick the months that match your style — the monkeys, sloths, toucans and caimans are here year-round.
